The Brief Is the Design

Bad briefs produce beautiful work that doesn't work.

It happens constantly. A designer delivers something visually stunning. The client approves it. It launches. Nothing moves. Because the question the design answered wasn't the right question to begin with. A great brief is the most underrated part of the design process.

Clarity before creativity.

Before a single frame gets opened, the core questions need answers. Who is this for, specifically? What do they believe before they arrive, and what do we need them to believe after? What is the single most important action we want them to take? Without those answers, design is decoration with good intentions.

The brief is where scope gets defined and scope creep gets prevented.

Every revision cycle that spirals out of control traces back to a brief that was vague. When the objective is clear, feedback becomes precise. "This doesn't match the brief" is a much more useful sentence than "I'm not sure it feels right."

Spend more time on the brief than feels comfortable. Write it out. Pressure test it. Make sure the client has signed off on the problem before you start solving it. The design will be better for it — and so will the relationship.
